What's the Weather Like When Traveling to St. Martin / St. Maarten?

St. Martin / St. Maarten is one of the Leeward islands located in the northeastern Caribbean. It is divided roughly in half with the French side to the north and Dutch side to the south. It has a population of about 80,000, also almost divided evenly between the french and dutch sides. It has many beautiful bays and white sand beaches including the famous orient beach. It is also home to Princess Juliana International Airport. This airport has been popularized because of its close proximinity to the beach. Crowds are attracted to the large aircraft that pass very close above.

St Maarten is characterized by a tropical moonsoon climate. This indicates warm temperatures all year, with a pronounced wet and dry season. Tropical storms and hurricanes occasionally affect the Leewards with the best chance ocurring during August and September.

St. Martin / St. Maarten rainfall has a wet and dry season with rainfall amounts nearly doubling in the summer and early autumn. The wet season coincides with the second half of the hurricane season. Four to five inches of rainfall occurs each month August through November. The increase in rainfall is due to active tropical waves moving from Africa across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. Occasionally showers and storms build with upper air low pressure centers during this time of year too. The driest time of year is from late winter to early spring where about two inches of rainfall occurs each month.

Temperatures are very uniform during the year with average highs in the upper 80's during the summer and low 80's during the winter. Morning low temperatures range from the upper 70's in the summerr to the low 70's during the winter.
