What's the Weather Like When Traveling to St. Kitts / Nevis / St. Eustatius / Saba?

St. Kitts and Nevis are two islands of the Leeward Islands located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea and west of Antigua and Barbuda. St. Kitts is an oblong shaped island and Nevis is round and only a few miles off of the southeastern tip of St. Kitts across 'The Narrows'. The total population of the two islands is approximately 47,000 with Basseterre the largest town on St. Kitts and Charlestown the largest town on Nevis. Both islands have stratovolanoes with Nevis Peak at the center Nevis at approximately 3200 feet. One of the highest peaks in the eastern Caribbean is Mt. Liamuiga on the northwest side of St. Kitts at around 3800 feet. Two smaller islands - Sint Eustatius and Saba are a short distance northwest of St. Kitts and have a similar climate. There is a risk from tropical cyclones during the hurricane season.

Saba and Sint Eustatius (Statia) are two volcanic islands northwest of St. Kitts. Both islands are considerably smaller than St. Kitts or Nevis. The population of Sint Eustatius is just over 3,000 and Saba 2,000. Both of these islands present a more laid back atmosphere as they are more rurual.

Rainfall
St. Kitts and Nevis have a tropical climate with about 45 inches of rain per year on average. Rainfall amounts are likely higher on the windward (eastern) slopes of the higher elevations of both islands. In contrast rainfall amounts are likely somewhat lower on the leeward slopes too. The wettest time of year occurs as tropical waves bring an increase in showers during hurricane season. Rainfall amounts total near five to over seven inches during Autumn on average. The driest time of year occurs during late winter where about two inches of rainfall occurs on the average month.

Temperatures
Temperatures on St. Kitts and Nevis only vary slightly being in the deep tropics. Daytime highs range from the mid 80's in the winter to low 90's in the summer to early autumn. Morning low temperatures vary in a similar fashion with lows in the low 70's during the winter and upper 70's during the summer. During the typical day throughout the year, temperatures vary by about ten degree from the high temperature to the low temperature. Record lows only drop to the low 60's in the winter. Record highs are in the low 90's during summer. Daytime temperatures can be expected to be slightly lower on the volcanic slopes.

Travel Weather Summary
St. Kitts, Nevis, St. Eustatius and Saba are picturesque Leeward islands on the Caribbean side of the Leewards. Daily temperatures change little throughout the year. The climate is generally dry, except during the Autumn with more frequent tropical waves bringing locally heavy tropical showers. The Leewards may be affected by tropical cyclones especially during hurricane season.
