Saturday Late Afternoon Update

Hilary weakens considerably
Satellite imagery showing considerable warming of the cloud tops near the eyewall of Hilary. The latest recon also measured a top wind of 94 kts at flight level. This wind from 700mb would extrapolate to stronger winds at the surface. At the same time, colder water west of the Baja would make a more stable boundary layer inhibiting the strongest winds from mixing to the surface. So IMHO, the winds are weaker than the official classification.

Sunday Midday Update

Hilary now officially downgraded to a tropical storm

Looking at the second image below NHC called this a hurricane - without any organized eyewall. Rainfall has been falling over southern California for hours at this point. So far rain totals range mostly from 1/4' to 1" from San Diego to SE of Los Angeles. 1/2-1" reported near death valley toward Las Vegas.

As expected, the main impacts to southern California was flash flooding. Near Los Angeles to San Diego generally 1.5-2.5 inches of rainfall was experienced. Mountainous areas, especially NE of Los Angeles received 2-4 inches of rainfall with totals over 5 inches. In the deserts to the east of Los Angeles 1-4 inches of rainfall was reported with isolated higher amounts.
