Thursday Midday Update

Tropical depression 6 classified

A strong tropical wave has been tracked for the last several days from the coast of Africa. Today convection has increased and a circulation noted so that the system could be classified as a tropical depression.

As of 11 AM EDT / 11 AM AST Tropical depression 6 was centered at 16.2 N / 37.1 W or about 870 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands. It was moving northwest at about 13 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 35 mph. Pressure was estimated at 1007 mb.

Forecast:

Tropical depression 6 will likely strengthen to a hurricane over the next few days as it tracks well to the northeast of the Lesser Antilles and east of Bermuda. At this time it is not considered a threat, but should still be watched for interests in Bermuda.

Friday Morning Update

Edouard classified

The Weather Situation:

Tropical depression 6 organized into tropical storm Edouard during the last 24 hours. Satellite imagery shows that it is currently fighting dry air and wind shear even though it looks impressive on satellite imagery. Edouard is in the open Atlantic waters.

Current Weather:

As of 5 AM EDT / 5 AM AST Tropical storm Edouard was centered at 17.6 N / 41.7 W or about 1175 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands / 1325 east of the Leeward islands. It was moving WNW at about 15 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 40 mph. Pressure was estimated at 1005 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:

Tropical storm Edouard will likely strengthen to a hurricane over the next few days as it tracks well to the northeast of the Lesser Antilles and east of Bermuda. At this time it is not considered a threat, but should still be watched for interests in Bermuda.

Friday Afternoon Update

Edouard changes little today

The Weather Situation:

Edouard is fighting southerly wind shear. Because of this, little strength change has occurred today. It remains well out to sea.

Current Weather:

As of 3 PM EDT / 3 PM AST Tropical storm Edouard was centered at 19.5 N / 43.7 W or about 1250 miles east of the northern Leeward islands. It was moving NW at about 16 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 45 mph. Pressure was estimated at 1003 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:

Tropical storm Edouard has been fighting wind shear but is still expected to strengthen to a hurricane in a few days when shear lessens. It is expected to still recurve east of Bermuda.

Saturday Morning Update

Edouard continues over the open Atlantic

The Weather Situation:

Edouard strengthened a touch overnight. It is still being affected by southerly wind shear, but it has lessened some. Heavy showers and storms on the northern side of the circulation suggest that Edouard is organizing.

Current Weather:

As of 5 AM EDT / 5 AM AST Tropical storm Edouard was centered at 20.7 N / 46.2 W or about 1115 miles ENE of the northern Leeward islands. It was moving NW at about 15 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 50 mph. Pressure was estimated at 996 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:

Tropical storm Edouard will continue to strengthen into a hurricane in a few days as shear lessens. It is expected to still recurve east of Bermuda.

Saturday Evening Update

Edouard strengthening

The Weather Situation:

Edouard slowly strengthened today. Wind shear has lessened and thunderstorms are expanding near the center of circulation which will allow further development.

Current Weather:

As of 5 PM EDT / 5 PM AST Tropical storm Edouard was centered at 22.5 N / 47.5 W or about 1050 miles ENE of the northern Leeward islands. It was moving NW at about 13 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 60 mph. Pressure was estimated at 995 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:

Tropical storm Edouard will continue to strengthen into a hurricane tomorrow. It is expected to still recurve east of Bermuda.

Sunday Morning Update

Edouard a hurricane unofficially

The Weather Situation:

Edouard is a hurricane..... unofficially. I'm not sure why the hurricane center hasn't upgraded other than Edouard is well out to sea. It has a nice eye on satellite imagery which indicates at least 80 MPH. They will definitely upgrade at the next advisory time at 11 AM edt. I will refer to Edouard as a hurricane in this update and also have my own estimates of wind and pressure with this stronger system.

Current Weather:

As of 5 AM EDT / 5 AM AST Hurricane Edouard was centered at 24.0 N / 49.7 W or about 950 miles ENE of the northern Leeward islands. It was moving NW at about 14 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 85 mph (70 NHC). Pressure was estimated at 975 (992 NHC) mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:

Hurricane Edouard is expected to recurve east of Bermuda and will remain over open waters.

Sunday Afternoon Update

Edouard becoming a major hurricane

The Weather Situation:

Edouard was upgraded to a hurricane at the 11 am advisory as we suspected. I will also now say it is a much stronger hurricane, at over 100 mph. Satellite imagery show a well defined eyewall.

Current Weather:

As of 3 PM EDT / 3 PM AST Hurricane Edouard was centered at 25.4 N / 51.8 W or about 875 miles ENE of the northern Leeward islands. It was moving NW at about 14 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 105 mph (80 NHC). Pressure was estimated at 968 MB (984 MB NHC - 11 AM advisory).

Tropical Weather Forecast:

Hurricane Edouard is expected to recurve east of Bermuda and will remain over open waters.

Monday Morning Update

Edouard starting to turn

The Weather Situation:

The hurricane center finally bumped the winds up on Edouard. The eye wall has expanded some, but is dealing with a little dry air to the northwest. The hurricane center and I are now both in agreement with the strength.

Current Weather:

As of 7 AM EDT / 7 AM AST Hurricane Edouard was centered at 27.0 N / 54.9 W or about 700 miles ESE of Bermuda. It was moving NW at about 15 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 105 mph. Pressure was estimated at 966 MB.

Tropical Weather Forecast:

Hurricane Edouard is expected to recurve east of Bermuda and will remain over open waters.

Wednesday Morning Update

Edouard moving toward the Azores

The Weather Situation:

Edouard is accelerating NE toward the Azores. It is slowly losing tropical characteristics over colder water. Higher than normal surf will reach the eastern U.S. coast today. Bermuda will also continue to see above normal surf on especially the east facing beaches.

Current Weather:

As of 5 AM EDT / 5 AM AST Hurricane Edouard was centered at 35.1 N / 55.4 W or about 1490 miles west of Fayal Island of the western Azores. It was moving NE at about 20 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 90 mph. Pressure was estimated at 959 MB.

Tropical Weather Forecast:

Hurricane Edouard is moving NE toward the Azores. It will lose tropical characteristics the next few days.

This will be the last update on Hurricane Edouard unless it poses a threat to land. It is expected to weaken by this weekend west of the Azores and possibly turn south again as an extratropical cyclone.
