Friday Evening Update

TD 8 just west of the African coast

The Weather Situation
Tropical depression 8 will strengthen and bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds to the Cabo Verde Islands just west of western Africa. It is an impressive clustered that just made its way off of the African continent.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 5:00 PM AST TD 8 was centered at 13.2 N / 18.6 W or 405 miles ESE of the southern Cabo Verde Islands. It was moving west at 10 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 35 mph. Pressure was estimated at 1002 MB.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Forecast models show TD 8 strengthening and starting to gain latitude. TD8 is not currently a threat.

Saturday Afternoon Update

Helene heading south of Cabo Verde

The Weather Situation
Helene will bring heavy rainfall to the southern Cabo Verde Islands as it passes during the next few days. African dust is seen being caught in the circulation and over the Islands to the north.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 11:00 AM AST Helene was centered at 13.4 N / 20.6 W or 270 miles ESE of the southern Cabo Verde Islands. It was moving west at 13 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 45 mph. Pressure was estimated at 1001 MB.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Forecast models show Helene strengthening then recurving to the central Atlantic Ocean over the next five days.

Sunday Evening Update

Helene now a hurricane

The Weather Situation
Helene is bringing rainfall to the southern Cabo Verde Islands today. A large eyelike structure is also appearing which indicates it's at hurricane strength

Current Tropical Weather
As of 5:00 PM AST Helene was centered at 13.4 N / 26.0 W or 145 miles SW of the southern Cabo Verde Islands. It was moving west at 13 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 75 mph. Pressure was estimated at 992 MB.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Forecast models show Helene strengthening then recurving to the central Atlantic Ocean over the next five days.

Helene has a large eye and continues to strengthen.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 5:00 PM AST Helene was centered at 14.9 N / 31.5 W or 1620 miles south of the Azores. It was moving WNW at 14 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 105 mph. Pressure was estimated at 974 MB.

Forecast models show Helene strengthening then recurving to the central Atlantic Ocean over the next five days.

Tuesday Morning Update

Helene just shy of major hurricane strength

The Weather Situation
Helene has now moved away from the Cabo Verde Islands. It will now be over the open waters of the eastern North Atlantic for a few days.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 5:00 AM AST Helene was centered at 16.0 N / 33.6 W or 1570 miles SSW of the Azores. It was moving WNW at 14 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 110 mph. Pressure was estimated at 968 MB.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Forecast models show Helene continuing to pull away from the Cabo Verde Islands and move northward toward the Azores by the end of the weekend.

Helene weaker, over open waters

The Weather Situation
Helene is being guided northward by a weakness of the sub tropical ridge across the north atlantic. It is not a threat to land over the next few days.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 5:00 AM AST Helene was centered at 19.2 N / 35.7 W or 1400 miles SSW of the Azores. It was moving NNW at 13 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 90 mph. Pressure was estimated at 977 MB.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Helene will gradually weaken as it moves generally north, then NNE. The Azores will see rain and some winds to possibly tropical storm force as it passes by Saturday.

Helene heading toward western Azores

The Weather Situation
Helene has weakened to a tropical storm and will be in the western Azores tomorrow. It currently is the dominant circulation in a Fujiwara effect with tropical storm Joyce to the west.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 5:00 AM AST Helene was centered at 31.9 N / 36.7 W or 725 miles SW of the Azores. It was moving north at 23 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 65 mph. Pressure was estimated at 992 MB.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Helene will gradually weaken as it moves generally north, then NNE. The Azores will see rain and some winds to possibly tropical storm force as it passes by Saturday.
