What's the Weather Like When Traveling to Barbados?

Barbados is the eastern most island of the Caribbean, situated in the North Atlantic Ocean. It has a population of about 275,000 people. Much of the island is comprised of limestone corals. The island has gently sloping hills rising up to 1,100 feet high at Mount Hillaby. Barbados is occasionally affected by tropical storms and hurricanes, with the main hurricane belt to the north.

Rainfall
Barbados has a wet and dry season. The wet season runs from July through November and correlates with the Atlantic hurricane season which officially is from June 1 through November 30. During this time period, rainfall amounts average between five to six and a half inches of rain per month. Rainfall can be considerably heavier if a tropical cyclone affects the island. The dry season starts in December and continues into June. The driest locations are near the coast with about 50" of annual rainfall. Rainfall amounts approach 75 inches over the highest areas of the island. This is due to enhancement from orographic lifting.

Temperatures
Temperatures on Barbados change very little throughout the year. High temperatures range from the low 80's during the winter to mid 80's during the summer. In a similar manner, overnight lows do not change much either. Winter lows typically are in the mid 70's and summer lows in the upper 70's.

Travel Weather Summary
Barbados has a tropical climate with the best chance of rain during hurricane season. Late summer and early autumn are the wettest months. Visitors wanting to minimize their chances of seeing rain should travel during the late winter and early spring. During this time, only about ½ to 1/3 of the rainfall occurs each month compared to the wet season. Hurricanes and tropical storms can also affect Barbados, with most moving north of the island. Because of this, travelers will want to stay informed on tropical weather information, especially during the hurricane season.
