Francine has formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico along the end of a stationary front. Satellite imagery shows banding with deep convection to the north. Francine will become a hurricane by tonight.

Dry air affecting Francine

Francine has clearly broken away from the tail end of a stationary front today. There has been a little dry air entering the circulation which has slowed development. IR satellite imagery is showing the deepest convection just west of the low center, but it hasn't been persistent due to episodes of dry air.

Hazards with Francine include damaging winds, storm surge, flash flooding and isolated tornadoes in outer bands that form ahead and during landfall.

Francine is trying to form a visible eye just before landfall on the central Louisiana coast this afternoon. Winds will be picking up rapidly as well as rising tides on the central Louisiana coast and eastward toward Alabama coastal areas.
