Monday Afternoon Update

Lorenzo named at 11 am edt

The Weather Situation
Satellite imagery showed a well defined circulation and deep convection early this morning. I tweeted at 8 am that NHC would likely classify the system.

Current tropical weather
As of 11:00 AM AST Lorenzo was centered at 11.1 N / 24.1 W or 225 miles south of the southern Cabo Verdes. It was moving west at 18 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 65 mph. Pressure was estimated at 1006 hPa.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Lorenzo is currently forecast to move toward the central north Atlantic ocean.

Lorenzo weakening

The Weather Situation
Lorenzo remains a strong hurricane with very deep convection on the north side of the circulation. It will continue to weaken as it moves over cooler ocean water temperatures.

Sunday Night Update

Lorenzo maxed out

The Weather Situation
Lorenzo quickly strengthened last night in which NHC said it reached 160 mph. This made it a cat 5 hurricane. It was based on satellite estimates and IMO would not have gone that strong. The hurricane hunters found a wind of 115 mph this afternoon - after the 11 am advisory estimated 145 mph.

Lorenzo will move past the western Azores tonight then near northern Ireland as an extratropical cyclone in a few more days.
