Tropical Depression 8 NE of the Bahamas
The Weather Situation
Tropical depression 8 is strengthening and is expected to be named tropical storm Gert soon. Deep convection is building over the center and to the south of the circulation. The only effects to the eastern United States will be higher than normal surf early to the middle of this week
Current Tropical Weather
As of 5 AM EDT Tropical Depression 8 was centered at 26.5 N / 70.9 W or 310 miles NE of the NE Bahamas / 545 SW of Bermuda. It was moving NNW at 14 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 35 mph. Pressure was estimated at 1011 mb.
Tropical Weather Forecast:
TD 8 will make its way between Bermuda and the east coast of the United States Monday through Wednesday then into the northern north Atlantic.

Gert no threat to US
The Weather Situation
Tropical depression 8 was upgraded as expected to tropical storm Gert on Sunday. It is facing some dry air and northerly shear which will continue strengthening for the next 24 hrs. Strengthening is forecast as it passes well NW of Bermuda and there is potential for Gert to become a minimal hurricane.
Current Tropical Weather
As of 5 AM EDT Tropical Storm Gert was centered at 29.7 N / 72.2 W or 475 miles WSW of Bermuda. It was moving NNW at 9 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 45 mph. Pressure was estimated at 1009 mb.

Tuesday Morning Update
Gert a bit stronger
The Weather Situation
Gert was upgraded to hurricane strength at 11 PM EDT last night based on microwave imagery. Short wave IR showed an eye wall forming, but still appeared weak on the west side. Hours earlier dry air wrapped around the center giving the impression of an eye. Deep convection this morning has finally wrapped completely around the center of circulation. IMO Gert was not a hurricane last night and only this morning can be classified as a minimal hurricane.

As of 5 AM EDT Hurricane Gert was centered at 31.8 N / 72.5 W or 450 miles west of Bermuda. It was moving north at 12 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 75 mph. Pressure was estimated at 986 MB.

Hurricane Gert will make its way NW of Bermuda and the east coast of the United States through tomorrow then into the northern north Atlantic.

Gert moving away from U.S. east coast
The Weather Situation
Gert is now picking up speed and moving away from the east coast. A well formed eye is now visible on satellite imagery.
Current Tropical Weather
As of 11 AM AST Hurricane Gert was centered at 37.4 N / 65.7 W or 510 miles SSW of Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was moving NE at 25 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 90 mph. Pressure was estimated at 975 MB.

Hurricane Gert will is accelerating toward the northern north Atlantic.

Gert losing tropical characteristics
The Weather Situation
Gert is rapidly moving east of eastern Canada. It is becoming sheared and the center of circulation is now visible. It will be extratropical later today or at least by early tomorrow. Only concerns are to shipping in the north Atlantic. The top sustained winds were at 105 mph last evening.
Current Tropical Weather
As of 8:30 AM AST Hurricane Gert was centered at 42.1 N / 52.2 W or 350 miles SSE of Cape Race, Newfoundland. It was moving ENE at 39 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 90 mph (100 mph NHC 5 AM). Pressure was estimated at 968 MB.

Hurricane Gert will become extratropical as it moves over colder water during the next 24 hours.
