Wednesday Afternoon Update

Madeline weakening rapidly

The Weather Situation
Madeline has weakened considerably since yesterday. A reconnaissance aircraft is currently investigating and has not found hurricane strength winds. It has not traveled to the area of deepest convection where the strongest winds are located though. It is in my estimation that Madeline is no longer a hurricane, but may have some hurricane force gusts. Madeline is facing strong westerly shear.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 2 PM HST Hurricane Madeline was centered at 18.7 N / 153.6 W or 120 miles ESE of Hilo, Hawaii. It was moving west at 12 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 65 mph ( 75 mph official estimate ). Pressure was estimated at 990 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Madeline will be passing just to the south of the Big Island during the next 24 hours. Winds to tropical storm force should be expected on the east side of the Big Island with some gusts to hurricane forecast possible over higher terrain.

Thursday Morning Update

Madeline passing south of Big Island

The Weather Situation
Madeline is passing well south of the Big Island. A reconnaissance aircraft found that the center was farther south near new deep convection. Wind shear will continue to weaken Madeline despite it being over warm water. Radar imagery shows a spiral band north of the main circulaton structure well south of the Big Island.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 11 PM HST Tropical Storm Madeline was centered at 16.9 N / 156.4 W or 150 miles SSW of South Point, Hawaii / 320 miles SSE of Honolulu, Hawaii. It was moving west at 14 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 50 mph. Pressure was estimated at 1003 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Madeline will be moving away from the Big Island today and pass south of the Hawaiian Islands the next few days. The main effects will be high than normal surf on the south facing beaches.
