Julio is a category 1 hurricane
Julio is now forming an eyewall and can be classified as a minimal hurricane. At this time it does not appear to be a threat to Hawaii.
As of 2 AM PDT / 5 AM EDT Julio was centered at 14.8 N / 129.0 W or about 1750 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii. It was moving WNW at about 17 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 75 mph. Pressure was estimated at 989 mb.
Forecast:
Julio is forecast to weaken to a tropical storm as it move northeast of the Big Island this weekend. It will increase swell on east and north facing beaches during the weekend.

Thursday Morning Update
Julio strengthening
IR satellite imagery show the Julio is strengthening. It is now a category 2 hurricane and may become a major hurricane later today.
As of 2 AM PDT / 5 AM EDT Julio was centered at 16.8 N / 134.9 W or about 1340 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii. It was moving WNW at about 17 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 100 mph. Pressure was estimated at 976 mb.
Forecast:
Julio is forecast to weaken to a tropical storm as it moves north of the Big Island this weekend. It will increase swell on east and north facing beaches during the weekend.

Thursday Night Update
Julio close to cat 3
Satellite imagery shows that Julio strengthened slightly today. IMO, satellite estimates indicate that Julio is close to cat 3 strength at 115 mph. NHC has a slightly lower estimate. Julio will weaken as it approaches the Islands.
As of 2 PM PDT / 5 PM EDT Julio was centered at 17.1 N / 137.7 W or about 1155 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii. It was moving west at about 17 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 115 mph (105 MPH NHC). Pressure was estimated at 970 mb.

Julio upgraded to cat 3
CPHC upgraded Julio to a cat 3 overnight. Since this advisory a few hours ago I think that winds may have slackened just a bit. Still near cat 3 strength. No major problems to Hawaii. An increase in showers / breezes / swell during the later part of the weekend.
As of 11 PM PDT / 5 AM EDT Julio was centered at 17.8 N / 140.4 W or about 970 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii. It was moving WNW at about 16 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 120 mph. Pressure was estimated at 962 mb.

Julio will pass comfortably north of the Islands tomorrow. The main effect will be higher swell and an increase in showers.

Julio remains a hurricane well north of Hawaii. Swell on the northern shores will be above average the next few days. This will be the last update on Julio.
As of 11 AM HST / 5 PM EDT Julio was centered at 24.6 N / 152.9 W or about 390 miles NE of Honolulu, Hawaii. It was moving NW at about 13 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 90 mph. Pressure was estimated at 982 mb.
Forecast:
Julio is forecast to weaken into a tropical storm as it moves well north of the Hawaiian Islands into the middle of the north Pacific.
Tropicast: Pacific Visible Satellite
