Still no big winter storms in sight...
The extended forecast still is not showing any snowstorms for the snowhouds here. Don't worry we still have about 6-8 weeks to get some really cold air and a chance for a significant storm.

Yea, it's sort of depressing for us ski enthusiasts here in the east.....

Re: Still no big winter storms in sight...
I'm not complaining b/c I don't ski- but I understand it for those that do and for those whose livelihood depends on it.
Detroit has gotten literally nothing. Northern Michigan has seen some accumulation (Traverse, etc.) but not as much as they want.
Also- weird information came out that the Great Lake levels are going to be just below last year- even with record precipitation from last year. The warm weather and lack of rain/snow has caused evaporation.
I'm certain that late Jan/ Feb will make up for our departure.

The official measurement is taken at Detroit's Metropolitan Airport, which is approximately 25 miles sw of downtown Detroit.Kitty wrote:How much snow has Detroit had this Winter so far?
I live about 10 miles north of the airport and have accumulated about 6" total for the season. We've been hit with clippers that give us 1/2"-1" at a time. BUT, we were just upgraded to a possible winter weather advisory for tomorrow (today 1/13) night into Saturday for 3-4" of snow. Lake affect will hit our western side of the state with 6-9" and further north into the Upper Pennisula, they are expecting blizzard conditions and up to 10-12". This is our first significant snow event forecasted this season.

And... we only received about 1.5" of snow out of this system. The west side got hit by lake effect as did Cleveland.

So, I guess another miss for the snow. How many winters have had such a poor showing for snow so far - any idea?

No idea, but we have had more colder and snowier years in the past decade than the opposite. Last season we received 70+" and our norm is around 47".rmandel wrote:So, I guess another miss for the snow. How many winters have had such a poor showing for snow so far - any idea?
We are expecting 1-4" of snow on Friday night in our area- first measurable storm this season.

I saw somewhere on the internet that Detroit now has over 8" of snow? I would think that is still low for the end of January.

I'm amazed how little snow and cold there has been in the east this year. Does anyone know what the long term forecast is for?

As you may have expected, the reports that I heard at the beginning of the winter said it was going to be warm. They were right.

Re: Still no big winter storms in sight...
Officially, yes Rich. And it is about 13" below normal accumulation for this point in the season. Annual totals typically pick up in February. We get about 45-50" a season. Last season's total was over 70".Tropical Hurricane wrote:I saw somewhere on the internet that Detroit now has over 8" of snow? I would think that is still low for the end of January.
I don't care if we don't get snow- but I do care if we don't get precipitation. The warmer weather (we have not had any long sustained below freezing cold) is also a factor in lowering the lake levels since it evaporates any moisture we do receive.

Very interesting to note that the locals want the snow to help with the Great Lake levels. I had really never thought about it like that.

It looks like the weather pattern will start to get more interesting over the next few weeks for especially our Northeastern friends. A few snowstorms appear to be in the works.
