Wednesday Morning Update

Gaston nearly a hurricane

The Weather Situation
Tropical depression 7 was classified Monday evening centered about 360 miles WSW of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean. It has steadily gained strength and is on the verge of being classified as a hurricane.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 5 AM EDT Tropical Storm Gaston was centered at 14.9 N /38.6 W or 975 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands. It was moving NW at 17 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 70 mph. Pressure was estimated at 999 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Gaston is tracking toward the central North Atlantic Ocean. Is it not forecast to pose any problems to land areas as it should stay well east of Bermuda.

Thursday Morning Update

Gaston a minimal hurricane

The Weather Situation
Despite fighting west or SW wind shear, Gaston is now strong enough to be classified as a minimal hurricane. Yesterday an unmanned aircraft, the Global Hawk investigated and was able to find winds strong enough to classify Gaston as a hurricane.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 5 AM EDT Hurricane Gaston was centered at 19.5 N /43.3 W or 1225 east of the Leewards. It was moving NW at 17 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 75 mph. Pressure was estimated at 988 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
There has been no change in Gaston's track forecast. It should remain in the open North Atlantic ocean well east of Bermuda.

Friday Afternoon Update

Gaston fighting shear

The Weather Situation
Gaston is fighting southerly wind shear today. Despite this, deep convection remains near the center. The hurricane center's forecast of Gaston regaining strength to a hurricane is reasonable as shear decreases.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 11 AM AST Tropical Storm Gaston was centered at 25.2 N /48.3 W or 1110 southeast of Bermuda. It was moving NNW at 17 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 65 mph. Pressure was estimated at 997 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
There has been no change in Gaston's track forecast. It should remain in the open North Atlantic ocean well east of Bermuda.

Gaston strengthening

The Weather Situation
Gaston is a category 2 hurricane in the open North Atlantic. It poses no threat to land.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 11 AM AST Hurricane Gaston was centered at 30.5 N /54.8 W or 600 miles east of Bermuda. It was moving NW at 5 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 105 mph. Pressure was estimated at 970 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
There has been no change in Gaston's track forecast. It should remain in the open North Atlantic ocean well east of Bermuda.

Monday Afternoon Update

Gaston turning

The Weather Situation
Gaston became the first major hurricane of the season late yesterday. Winds topped out at 120 mph. Gaston is slowing and is about to make a turn to the east.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 11 AM AST Hurricane Gaston was centered at 31.0 N /55.8 W or 1680 miles west of the Azores. It was moving north at 2 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 110 mph. Pressure was estimated at 963 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Gaston will move ENE and be in the vicinity of the Azores by Saturday.

Tuesday Afternoon Update

Gaston heading toward the Azores

The Weather Situation
Gaston weakened some yesterday and has regained some strength today. It is a classic looking hurricane with a large eye. The western and central Azores will see effects in the form of rain squalls and increasing swell, especially on the western facing beaches.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 11 AM AST Hurricane Gaston was centered at 32.2 N /52.9 W or 1510 miles west of the Azores. It was moving ENE at 8 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 105 mph. Pressure was estimated at 968 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Gaston will move ENE and be in the vicinity of the western Azores by Friday. It will be moving away from the central Azores during Saturday.

Gaston still heading toward the Azores

The Weather Situation
Gaston continues to be a classic looking hurricane. It has a large eye of roughly 60 miles diameter. It will be picking up forward speed. Impacts will include high surf, heavy rainfall and tropical storm force winds.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 2 PM AST Hurricane Gaston was centered at 34.5 N / 47.7 W or 1100 miles west of the central Azores. It was moving ENE at 15 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 115 mph. Pressure was estimated at 961 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Gaston will move ENE and be in the vicinity of the western Azores by Friday. It will be moving away from the central Azores during Saturday. Interests in the Azores should follow the progress of Gaston.

Gaston slowly weakening

The Weather Situation
Gaston is slowly becoming extra - tropical. Its eye has filled with low clouds since yesterday and its wind field is expanding, as the strongest winds in the eye wall slowly weaken.

Current Tropical Weather
As of 8 AM AST Hurricane Gaston was centered at 37.2 N / 41.9 W or 725 miles west of the central Azores. It was moving ENE at 26 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 85 mph. Pressure was estimated at 981 mb.

Tropical Weather Forecast:
Gaston will move ENE and be in the vicinity of the western Azores by late Friday. It will be moving away from the central Azores during Saturday. Interests in the Azores should follow the progress of Gaston.
