Sunday Afternoon Update

Amanda a strong cat 4 hurricane
Amanda has become the strongest hurricane for the month of May in the eastern Pacific ocean at 155 mph. The latest satellite imagery shows cloud top warming as well as weakening in the western eyewall, so I'm going with a lower intensity of 145 mph. This weakening should continue over the next few days.

Little impact other than swell is expected to directly effect the western coast of Mexico.

As of 8 am pdt (5 am edt) Amanda was centered near 11.8 N / 111.1 W or about 770 miles south of the southern tip of baja California. Movement is northward at 2 mph. Top sustained winds are estimated at 145 mph (NHC 155 mph) Pressure is estimated at 932 mb.

Forecast:
Amanda will slowly drift northward well west of the western Mexican coast. It will gradually lose strength the middle of the week and beyond. There will be increased swell affecting the southern Baja and west central coast of Mexico this week.
