The 2008 hurricane season turned out to be near average if you look at the data since 1995. It was well above average for "long term averages". The long term average of tropical cyclones in the north Atlantic is: 10 tropical storms of which 6 become hurricanes. We had 16 tropical storms of which 8 became hurricanes and 5 were major hurricanes.
In the northeast Pacific, there were 17 tropical storms of which 7 became hurricanes and 2 major hurricanes.
