Sunday Early AM Update
Just when you think you can take a break........
Usually tropical weather forecasters get to take it easy on the holidays. Well, maybe not this year. We may have a new subtropical storm before 2007 is over. Satellite imagery shows convection increasing, especially on the northern semicircle of a low. The center of circulation is about 950 miles southwest of the Azores. A cold front is approaching from the northwest and will likely move it northeastward while bringing shearing winds also. So, the window is small, but the disturbance still has a chance to be classified.
Is a subtropical storm forming south of the Azores?

Sunday Afternoon Update
"Subtropical storm" missing the window...
NHC sent out a special statement mentioning that a disturbance may be named a subtropical storm later today.
We believe that this "unofficial" subtropical storm is now weakening and has missed its opportunity to be named. Convection is being pushed northeastward as an approaching front is also bringing shearing winds aloft. This will be the last statement on this system, unless NHC still names it.
Happy New Year!
